CSF diagnostics

Within the neuropathological spectrum, we also offer the cytological analysis of CSF samples. This mainly addresses the inquiry if the CSF contains tumor cells (i.e. in the case of meningeosis carcinomatosa or lymphomatosa). Other inquiries which can be addressed with CSF cytology are the presence of hemosiderophages in case of subarachnoid hemorrhages or the characterization of inflammatory cell elements in case of meningitis. For further classifications, we offer special stainings (iron or Gram stains) and immunohistochemical analyses.

The relevance of the CFS cytology depends highly on the quality of the CSF samples, which is mainly influenced by the time between the removal and the assessment. This means that you should send the native CSF samples immediately to our laboratory. If the CSF sample cannot be sent immediately after the removal, you could alternatively send us an unstained cytospin sample.
